What Security Guard Training Really Looks Like in Ontario

When you hire a security company, you're trusting their guards with the safety of your people, property, and reputation. Understanding what training those guards have received is critical to making an informed decision.

The Mandatory Minimum

In Ontario, all security guards must complete a 40-hour training program approved by the Ministry of the Solicitor General before they can apply for a licence. This program covers:

  • Introduction to the security industry
  • Legal authorities and responsibilities
  • Effective communication and conflict resolution
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Report writing and note-taking
  • Use of force theory (guards do NOT carry weapons in Ontario)

After completing the course, candidates must pass a provincial licensing exam to receive their security guard licence.

Beyond the Minimum: Alpha Security Training

At Alpha Security, we believe the 40-hour minimum is just the starting point. Our guards complete an additional 80+ hours of proprietary training that includes:

De-escalation & Crisis Intervention

Our guards learn advanced techniques for calming volatile situations without physical confrontation. This is especially critical in healthcare, residential, and public-facing environments.

Industry-Specific Modules

  • Healthcare: Patient rights, PHIPA compliance, managing aggressive patients
  • Construction: Site safety protocols, WHMIS, equipment identification
  • Corporate: Executive protection, visitor management, confidential information handling
  • Retail: Loss prevention, shoplifter apprehension protocols

Technology Proficiency

Every guard is trained on our digital reporting platform, GPS check-in systems, and communication protocols. This ensures consistent, accurate reporting across all assignments.

Ongoing Development

Security threats evolve constantly. Our guards participate in quarterly refresher training, scenario-based exercises, and peer learning sessions to stay sharp.

Why It Matters

Companies that invest in training see measurably better outcomes: fewer incidents, better client satisfaction, lower turnover, and reduced liability exposure. When you choose Alpha Security, you're choosing guards who are prepared for anything.
